If I need emergency dental services, should I go to the emergency room?

It is generally not recommended to go to the emergency room or urgent care, unless it is a life-threatening situation, as they are typically not equipped to handle emergency dental care services.

Instead, you should try to see an emergency dentist. Many dental practices offer emergency dental services, and you can also find emergency dental clinics that specialize in providing immediate care for your urgent dental problems.

If you are unable to find a provider, or if your emergency occurs outside of regular office hours, then you may need to go to the emergency room or urgent care.

Are dental infections considered a dental emergency?

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), a dental infection can be life-threatening and affect your health if left untreated by spreading to the brain or the heart, causing serious complications.

If you have a dental infection, it is important to seek immediate attention from an emergency dentist. Possible treatment options include prescribing antibiotics, a root canal, or emergency tooth extraction.

Common Dental Emergencies

Toothaches

These can be caused by various underlying dental issues, including cavities, a chipped tooth, gum disease, broken teeth, or a loose filling. Call your Vancouver emergency dentist as soon as possible to help get pain relief.

The tooth gets knocked out

If you’re able to locate the tooth, pick it up by the crown, or the top part that you bite with. Gently rinse the tooth with water to remove any dirt or debris. Do not scrub the tooth and do not use any soap or chemicals. Try to reinsert the tooth into its socket, if possible.

Hold the tooth in place by gently biting down on a piece of gauze or cloth. If you are unable to reinsert the tooth, place it in a small container of milk, saline solution, or saliva to keep it moist. Do not store the tooth in water. Time is critical in saving a knocked-out tooth, so try to see an emergency dentist within 30 minutes if possible.

A broken crown or broken tooth

If the broken tooth is significant or causing discomfort, see your emergency dentist as soon as possible. If your discomfort is mild from the broken tooth, you don’t want to wait for too long but you can still schedule at your convenience.

Lost filling or lost crowns

Avoid chewing on the side of the mouth where the filling is missing. See your emergency dentist as soon as possible. If left untreated, a lost filling or dental crown can lead to further decay or damage to your teeth.

Soft tissue injury (e.g. bitten tongue or lip)

If you’re experiencing bleeding due to a soft tissue injury, then stopping the bleeding or further injury should be your priority. If you cannot stop the bleeding, then you need to see urgent dental care. For severe pain, you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Depending on the severity of the soft tissue injury, emergency dentists may recommend treatment such as sutures, antibiotics, or pain medication.

Abscess (infection)

Dental infections can be serious dental emergencies or become serious dental emergencies, seeking immediate attention from an emergency dentist.

Jaw injury

Whether from a car accident or trauma to your jaw, avoid anything that causes pain and seek immediate evaluation from a dentist.

Wisdom tooth pain

Wisdom teeth are the last molars to emerge in the back of your mouth and can cause pain and discomfort when they are impacted or do not have enough space to grow properly. Wisdom teeth pain doesn’t always require an emergency dental visit, but you should schedule to see a dentist as soon as you start experiencing pain.

An implant or temporary crowns come off my teeth

Most of the time this is not considered a dental emergency. You can try putting the temporary crowns back on yourself. If they do not stay you can try using a little toothpaste or denture adhesive. If you can not figure out how to put the crowns back on your teeth, call your dental office for help.

How can I prevent the need for emergency dental care?

While it may be impossible to prevent dental emergencies, maintaining good dental health goes a long way. When smaller dental problems arise, it’s important to get them checked out as soon as possible. Doing so will lessen your chances of experiencing a dental emergency.

If you experience a dental emergency, seek treatment from a 24-hour dentist as soon as possible.
